Wright is the premier auction house specializing in modern and contemporary design. Since 2000 we have sold nearly 20,000 lots across the spectrum of 20th and 21st century design. We have pioneered whole fields of collecting and transformed the market for modern design. Our dedication to design drives what we do and who we are.
The Rudder furniture series includes all that defines Isamu Noguchi’s genius: archetypal allusions, reductive simplicity and sculptural lyricism. The organic fin-shaped leg formally contrasts with the minimal legs, creating an asymmetrical yet balanced composition while the tops perch weightlessly above the supports. With just a few disparate elements, Noguchi achieves a surreal landscape within functional objects.
Designed in 1944, the Rudder series was introduced in 1948 to the growing post-war market. Although akin to the clean lines of other Herman Miller furniture, Noguchi’s pieces are unique in their expressiveness and radical for their association with the spirit of fine arts. Ultimately, the biomorphic designs proved too avant-garde for the general public and production ceased after only three years.
